Why We Sail
Sailing is an exhilarating experience that can unlock a whole new world of adventure and excitement. For those who have never set foot on a sailboat, the thought of taking to the open water may seem daunting, but with the right guidance and a sense of adventure, anyone can become a sailor. The thrill of harnessing the power of the wind and feeling the boat surge forward beneath you is truly indescribable, and once you experience it, you’ll be hooked for life. Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a way to connect with nature, or an opportunity to challenge yourself, sailing has something to offer for everyone. So why not take the plunge and try sailing for yourself? Come join us out on the water!
Praeceptor Thursdays
Praeceptor Thursdays are a great way to get out on the water and find out if sailing is right for you. Every year, Bayview Yacht Club hosts the Thursday Off the Doc race series which is held bi-weekly during the sailing season. The races bring together experienced sailors and novices alike to compete on the water and show off their skills. The races start on Thursdays at 7pm right in front of the clubhouse. Before the race, crews monitor the race committee on the upper balcony of the Clubhouse to see which way they will send us. The race committee will either send us starting up or down the river depending upon wind conditions and forecasts. The boats then take off on their course. No matter what, the race begins and ends right in front of the clubhouse, which provides spectators with a front-row view of the action! With the wind, waves, and other boats as their adversaries, sailors skillfully navigate their boats through the course, making sure not to collide in the sometimes very tight mark roundings. The starts are often the most exhilarating part of the race, with 10,000-30,000lb boats jockeying for position at a tight starting line. If this does not get your blood pumping and the beer flowing, we don’t know what will! The event is not just about competition, but also camaraderie, the stories we tell, and showing people how fun the sport of sailing can be! Praeceptor is arguably the most fun boat on the water and knows how to have a great time! On our Praeceptor Thursdays, the main mission is to get people into sailing! We will usually load the boat up with anywhere from 10-20 people and race some, if not all of the course depending upon the wind. Typically, we end up racing half the race and then finding a cool spot to cruise to in order to drop the anchor and swim! Thursdays are all about learning and fun on the water for the Crew on Praeceptor. Guests can “choose their own adventure” on these nights where it is what you put into it. Some guests are excited to learn about racing while others just want to learn how a sailboat works and still others just enjoy being on the water and seeing an amazing sunset over the Detroit skyline!

Sunday Funday
Sunday Funday is an event on Praeceptor where we decide to meet down at the club for brunch and then take a leisurely cruise out to the Grosse Point Yacht club where we typically anchor off the shore to swim for a couple hours! This is another event where we pack the boat full of racers, cruisers, and friends for an eventful day out on the gorgeous water of Lake St. Claire! Make sure to bring snacks and drinks because we are usually gone for about 6 hours or more. We usually try to meet down at the club around 11:00am for brunch and then start to head over to the boat around 12- 12:30pm. From there we usually sail until around 5 or 6pm depending upon the day. Make sure to stay in the loop if you are interested in obtaining an invite!! A good time is always had by all!!
Adventure Cruises
Adventure Cruises are longer multi day adventures that we take on the boat. A Typical adventure cruise is a Friday- Sunday but we also much longer adventure trips like the trip back from Mackinaw or a Bahama cruise. Usually we head down to Put-in-Bay or Grosse Ile once or twice a year. We also cruise the boat back from Mackinaw island which is a 4 to 5 day cruise where we stop at multiple different ports along the way back to Bayview. If you are Interested in going on multi day cruises get in touch with Us!
